Bach in Baltimore ends our 2017-2018 Season with Bach’s inventive motet, Singet dem Herr ein neues Lied (Sing unto the Lord a new song). It is written for a double chorus without instrumental accompaniment. In 1789, Mozart reportedly was deeply moved by a performance of this piece and asked to see the music. The Bach in Baltimore Choir will also show their tremendous virtuosic versatility with performances of several a cappella works of American composers.
Admission: $20 in advance, $22 at the door
Founded in 1987 by Frank Cimino with just 14 boys, the mission of The Maryland State Boychoir has remained clear: to foster the boychoir tradition by offering talented boys opportunities to sing and build self-esteem, self-discipline and character. Thirty years later, the Boychoir still embraces that goal. The Maryland State Boychoir is a diverse group of talented boys who love to sing. Qualified applicants are accepted regardless of their families’ financial means and are not discriminated against on any basis. Prior musical training is not expected, but an audition is required. Auditions are held in the fall, winter and spring for potential members who are not required to have prior music training. A qualified applicant is any boy who loves to sing, is committed to the organization, and can sing in tune with a pleasant voice. Not only do choristers receive training in voice lessons and music theory, they also develop friendships with boys from varied backgrounds, build self-esteem and self-discipline through hard work and dedication, and develop a sense of community through their commitment to the organization. The Archbishop Curley Schola is comprised of current Curley students who are invited to become members based on music acuity and demonstrated dedication. The Schola rehearses after school two days each week. The Schola specializes in the performance of a capella music and consists of approximately fourteen (14) students. Days and dates of Schola rehearsals are listed in the Choral Program Directory following the Schedule of Performances and Special Rehearsals. The Güde String Quartet was formed at Peabody Preparatory in the Performance Academy for Strings, a program that fosters the development of serious young musicians and supports their chamber music growth and aspirations. The members of the quartet have all individually been recognized in regional and national competitions on their instruments, and have developed a wonderful string quartet sound and energy. Their chamber music coach at Peabody is Dr. Daniel Levitov, well-known cellist and pedagogue in the Baltimore area. Güde String Quartet Members: Drawing from a student body of more than 2,500 students, the Richard Montgomery choral program has three ensembles: Madrigals, Concert Choir, and Treble Chorale. These ensembles perform at numerous concerts, competitions, and community events, regularly receiving accolades and superior competition scores. The Richard Montgomery choral program is under the direction of Ms. Carrie Eyler.Maryland State Boychoir
