OUR MISSION

OUR MISSION

At Bach in Baltimore, we promote the greatest music of the Baroque era, we grow the next generation of listeners and performers of this music, and we have the time of our lives doing so.

Message from the President

Attracting the next generation

Attracting the next generation

Maestro Herbert Dimmock created this musical ensemble in 1987, and for 37 years under his guidance we have delivered on our mission to bring the highest quality performances of Bach and baroque music to our city and neighboring towns across Maryland. Today, thanks to the Maestro and all our incredible volunteers, Maryland has a Baroque specialist – Bach in Baltimore.

Now, more than ever, we wish to share the beauty of baroque music with the widest audience possible. We revisited our Mission statement to invoke the importance of carrying our heritage forward to “grow the next generation of listeners and performers”. And while we continue to perform in different neighborhoods and counties, taking our music to new listeners every year, we are particularly attentive to attracting younger audiences to the Baroque universe. Our Student Voice Exchange program has been highly successful in encouraging school choirs from around Maryland to perform in public with us. It offers a unique opportunity for students to sing with our choir and orchestra, guided by our Maestro. And because children today have very little exposure to classical music, we decided, two years ago, to make every concert free for children under 13. Last season we went a step further and launched two Kids Come Free concerts for all children 18 and under, hoping that you, our patrons, would jump on the opportunity to initiate your children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews to the wonderful world of Bach and Baroque music. This season, encouraged by your response, we have more than doubled the number of Kids Come Free concerts, increasing to 5 concerts total, giving you even more opportunities to share, educate and expand the horizons of our young children. We truly hope you will take advantage of, and support our effort, by organizing family outings that are sure to make enjoyable memories for all.

So, look for our “Kids Come Free” concerts and bring as many children as you want! Only by sharing today your love for this music will you ensure that it continues to be played for generations to come.

As Maryland’s second largest musical ensemble, we are proud of our achievements, and we hope to continue to earn your generous support.

Welcome to our 37th season.

OUR 3 COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

Student Voice Exchange

Student Voice Exchange

We have created one of the most extensive music education programs in Maryland. The objective of the Student Voice Exchange Program is two-fold:

  • To help students expand their musical literature and language knowledge, working with Maestro Dimmock
  • To give students the chance to sing for a paying audience -either with our Choir and orchestra or alone

The immersive experience begins with Maestro Dimmock visiting the school and working with the students to prepare them for their performance. On the day of the performance, Maestro Dimmock provides a rare insight into Bach’s highly personal and nuanced musical language and a presentation of the selected works. The Student Voice Exchange group is invited to join the Bach in Baltimore Choir and orchestra in the performance of a select piece, or alternatively to perform a set of their own choosing. For our 2024-25 Season, six student groups have been selected as part of the Student Voice Exchange Program.

Community Outreach

Community Outreach

With generous support from the Mitzvah Fund for Good Deeds at the Baltimore community Foundation, this program is our commitment to give back to the elderly and bring great music into their local retirement communities. It represents up to 15 concerts each year, with a roster of 17+ local retirement communities across Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Howard County, Harford County, Anne Arundel County, Frederick County, and beyond. Concerts are free for senior residents, as well as staff and families.

Emerging artists

Emerging artists

The biggest challenge for emerging professional musicians is securing their first positions in a competitive field. With support from the Paul M. Angell Foundation, Bach in Baltimore proudly presents our Emerging Artists Program, designed to help recent graduates establish their careers.

Performance Opportunities: Musicians will have multiple performance opportunities throughout the season, including the First Sunday concert series and our Outreach Series in area retirement communities.

Resume Building: Each musician will be featured as a soloist in multiple works, enhancing their artistic resumes and CVs.

Professional Development: Maestro Dimmock, Founder & Music Director of Bach in Baltimore, will coach and mentor participants, offering his legendary knowledge of Baroque music. He will also facilitate introductions to other performing ensembles, crucial for career networking.

Bach in Baltimore is dedicated to sustaining the rich history of classical music and the performing arts for future generations.
