Bach in Baltimore returns with triumphant works by Bach and Handel performed by the Bach in Baltimore Choir and Orchestra. Handel’s The Music for Royal Fireworks was composed to celebrate the signing of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle between Britain and France, ending a conflict over the Austrian throne. Handel named the third movement “La Paix” (“The Peace”) and the “La Réjouissance” (“The Rejoicing”) to commemorate the mood of elation that followed the conclusion of the conflict. King George II, who had a keen interest in music, told Handel that he “hoped there would be no fiddles”, much to the composer’s alarm. Handel was able to satisfy the king’s tastes by writing for a military band of 18 brass instruments, 37 woodwinds, and three timpani. It premiered with fireworks in London’s Green Park for an audience of over 12,000 in 1749. “Fireworks” are also on display with Bach’s Cantata 63: Christen, ätzet diesen Tag (Christians, engrave this day), a festive work that opens with trumpets heralding the mercy of the coming Jesus. With a rapid-fire exchange between the chorus and orchestra, the music builds majestic anticipation.
Kerry Holahan, Soprano
Kerry Holahan, soprano, is a solo and ensemble singer acclaimed for her versatility and interpretation of Historically Informed music, especially of the Renaissance and Baroque eras. She has appeared as soloist with American Bach Soloists in San Francisco, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and recently debuted with Grammy-winning vocal ensemble Seraphic Fire at the Aspen Music Festival, as well as the 21st Century Consort and the Folger Consort in Washington, D.C. Kerry is a staff singer at St. John’s Church, Lafayette Square and regularly appears with the Washington National Cathedral Choir. Prior to coming to the DMV, Kerry lived in Beijing for eight years where she toured with Chinese and international music ensembles and coordinated cross-cultural initiatives with Chinese and US arts organizations. While in China, she appeared as soloist with world-renowned Early Music soprano Dame Emma Kirkby and Metropolitan Opera bass-baritone Shenyang. Kerry is fluent in Mandarin and is one of the few American sopranos to be actively singing Chinese traditional and contemporary works both in the United States and China. Kerry earned a BA in East Asian Studies from Wesleyan University; a Master of Music, Early Music Vocal Performance from the Peabody Conservatory; as well as a Vocal Performance Diploma, with Distinction, from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, UK.
Joseph Regan, tenor
Joseph Regan is thrilled to be returning to the Bach in Baltimore Concert Series this season. Mr. Regan is a highly sought after performer whose singing has taken him all over the Eastern Seaboard and parts of Europe. Recent highlights from the opera stage include a turn as Azaël from Debussy’s L’Enfant Prodigue for Lyric Opera of Baltimore, Don José in Opus Concert Theater’s production of Carmen, and Pinkerton from Madame Butterfly with Loudon Lyric Opera. Mr. Regan is frequently engaged as a tenor soloist. He is particularly well known for his singing of Bach and Handel with numerous performances of Handel’s Messiah as well as Bach’s Passions and Cantatas to his credit. Recent highlights include the regional premiere of the concert oratorio Barbara Allen with Shepherd University Masterworks and Gerald Finzi’s A Farewell to Arms with Live Arts Maryland. In addition to multiple turns as the tenor soloist for Bach’s St. John Passion, Mr. Regan recently made his debut as the Evangelist. Mr. Regan also deeply enjoys singing art song, in particular French Mélodies. This intimate and personal form allows him to more deeply explore the connection between text, music, emotional intent, and its impact on the listener.
He earned his BM and MM from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University and his DMA from University of Maryland, College Park.
Phillip Collister, bass
Phillip Collister, bass-baritone, has performed frequently as soloist with Bach in Baltimore as well as solo engagements with the Handel Choir of Baltimore, Washington Chamber Orchestra, the Washington Bach Consort, Maryland Handel Festival, the Bach Sinfonia, and internationally at the Handel Festival in Halle, Germany. He has performed at Carnegie Hall with his professional ensemble Trio Montage who performed newly commissioned works for voice, clarinet, and piano. He maintains an active solo recital and concert schedule as well. Collister has directed, conducted, or produced numerous operas, operettas, musicals and concerts. From 2009-2016 he served as the Music Director of Young Victorian Theatre Company in Baltimore, and from 2001-2006 Collister was the producing artistic director and music director for the Maryland Arts Festival. He has also served as the conductor of the opera studio at the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival. Collister serves as the Chairperson of the Department of Music and Professor of Voice/Opera at Towson University where he has been a member of the music faculty since 1998.
Michael Vaughn, violin
Michael Vaughn, violin, has been performing with Bach in Baltimore since 2015, and has been a free-lance violinist in the Baltimore region since moving here from Indianapolis in 2009. He has performed with a variety of ensembles including the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, Delaware Symphony, Reading Symphony, Maryland Symphony, Baltimore Choral Arts, and Baltimore Symphony Musicians. In Indiana he regularly performed with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, and was associate concertmaster and soloist with the Muncie and Richmond (Indiana) Symphony Orchestras. Michael and his wife Nana founded the Fisher Chamber Players in Fishers, IN, and he served as conductor and artistic director. He earned a violin performance degree (with a minor in computer science) and music education degree from Indiana University, studying with Paul Biss and Mimi Zweig. In addition to being active as a musician, Michael works as a technologist, working the past 3 years as the associate director for digital accessibility at Yale University, where he works to help make Yale’s digital campus accessible to people with disabilities. Michael’s wife Nana is an active violist and educator in the area, and his 3 children are also active in the arts, with the youngest two studying viola and percussion at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Michael’s identical twin brother, Matt, is co-principal trombone of the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Karoline Guerin is thrilled to perform with Bach in Baltimore for the first time this season. This
year, Ms. Guerin also makes her debut with Opera Baltimore as Marthe in Gounod’s Faust, as
well as with Bel Cantanti Opera as Mercedes in Bizet’s Carmen. She recently relocated from
Colorado, where she enjoyed numerous operatic and oratorio performances. As an alto soloist,
she has performed Händel’s Messiah, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, and Mozart’s Requiem. Her
operatic roles include the title role in Bel Canto Legacy’s reduction of Carmen, Emilia in Verdi’s
Otello with Opera Fort Collins, and La Zia Principessa in Puccini’s Suor Angelica with the Ralph
Opera Center at CSU. Additionally, she placed first in her division in Boulder Bach Festival’s
World Bach Competition in 2020. Ms. Guerin is a professionally trained violinist and an active
recitalist as well, and has enjoyed presenting several sacred music recitals for voice and violin.
Towson University Chorale
Led by Diana V. Sáez, Director of Choral Activities, the Towson University Chorale is a mixed-voice ensemble dedicated to the performance of choral music from all styles and historical periods. The Chorale consists primarily of undergraduate music majors from the department of music. In addition to their regular performance schedule at the department of music, the Chorale performs during other Towson University events and is regularly invited to perform around the city of Baltimore.
This past September, University Chorale was invited to perform at the Joyfully Together Choral Festival at the Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in Virginia.
In the fall of 2019, Chorale was one of two choirs invited to perform Wynton Marsalis’ Abyssinian Mass at the NCCO biennial conference.
